Duku were approached to carry out an aerodynamic study on the feasibility of a retro-fittable solution aerodynamic fairing for lorries.
The brief called for a solution that could be retro fitted to a wide range of lorries or similar vehicles. The solution needed to be able to fold flat and be manufactured cost effectively.
A design was proposed that would use a combination of lightweight aluminium extrusions to provide key structural components. Two folding side panels allowed the entire unit to fold flat, and when extended, a material was stretched between the two panels, to create an aerodynamic profile to the front of the vehicle.
WIND TUNNEL TESTING
The proposed solution underwent a series of wind tunnel tests using proof of concept prototypes to establish the optimum shape for the fairing when extended. The results of the tests were fed into the CAD development to further improve the design before presentation..
